Psychic Self-Defense

Psychic self-defense involves techniques to protect yourself from annoying spirits, psychic perceptions that are unpleasant such as sensing the emotions of other people (empathy), and any type of psychic attack from a living person or disembodied entity. I have discussed various methods of psychic self-defense previously in my blog and website. This post provides an overview and links to other posts on my blog and website with more information.

In this post, and in the linked articles, prayer is recommended. Some people may feel uncomfortable with prayer if they have not had a religious upbringing. However if you are going to endeavor into spiritual phenomena you must learn to use the tools of spirituality or you will limit your ability to accomplish your purpose. If you feel uncomfortable praying, do it anyway. Also, when you say a prayer or an affirmation, repeat it a few times if necessary to firmly establish it in your mind. Don't just rush through it without thinking.

  • Anytime you feel you need protection, visualize an impenetrable barrier of white light completely surrounding you and also repeat this affirmation (source: John Edward):
I surround myself with the white light of divine love and protection.
In this situation you can also use the prayer for protection:
Oh God, please watch over me and protect me so that only the highest and best forces can influence me.

  • If unwanted spirits are causing problems see: What to do about Unwanted Spirit Contact: How to Help Spirits Complete Their Transition to the Spirit World. There is also a section on how to deal with unwanted spirit contact in How to Cope with Being Psychic which may be helpful even if you are not aware of having psychic abilities.

  • If you feel there is negative energy in a room or location, visualize it filled with white light.

  • Before you do any type of spiritual practice such as spiritual healing, communicating with spirits, or any type of psychic development meditation, start with the prayer for protection:
Oh God, please watch over me and protect me so that only the highest and best forces can influence me.

  • If you have psychic abilities or you are developing psychic abilities see this: How to Cope with Being Psychic

  • If you are experiencing the emotions of other people (empathy), there is also a section on how to cope with that here: How to Cope with Being Psychic

  • Before doing any type of spirit communication please read A Word of Warning section in A Natural Method for Learning To Communicate with Spirits and Further Adventures of a Student Medium: The Dark Side, both of which are on my website.

If you find yourself confronted with a situation that you cannot handle yourself, you can try working with a therapist who specializes in spiritual issues or a medium who does spirit rescue.

Psychic Development

Psychic Development Should be Undertaken as Part of Spiritual Development

Psychic development should be undertaken as a part of spiritual development. Psychic abilities are the abilities that come from the spirit. The brain normally filters out these abilities while the person is incarnated in a physical body but sometimes some psychic abilities leak through. Psychic development will therefore help a person to better understand their spiritual nature. If a person develops their psychic abilities to a sufficiently high level of effectiveness, they may use them to help other people which will also provide those people with evidence that we are all incarnated spirits. If a person is going to undertake psychic development, it is important that they develop spiritually at the same time to ensure that they use psychic abilities ethically. Unethical use of psychic abilities will have negative karmic consequences.

Background information about psychic phenomena can be at the Psychic FAQ.

Methods

The following links have detailed information on ways to develop psychic abilities:

Most people have some psychic ability and that ability can be improved with training and practice. However, just like most people can pick out a tune with one finger on the piano but not everyone can play in a concert hall, there are a wide range of psychic abilities and even with practice and training not everyone will be able to become a working psychic. But even if a person only has a few experiences each year, they add up over time and that evidence of a person's spiritual nature changes the way they look at the purpose and meaning of life. So there is no reason why anyone should hesitate to develop their psychic skills.

Meditation

The main method of psychic development is meditation. It calms the mind, particularly the logical analytical mind and makes your more aware of intuitive mental activity and psychic impressions.

Meditation also promotes spiritual development. Having a calm mind helps you live more mindfully, more in harmony with your spiritual values. When the mind is calm, and when you engage in relaxing concentration and mindfully notice when your mind wanders, you see that that poses, attitudes, and opinions are often just empty pretense. You see how distracting thoughts of attachments and aversions and selfishness are silly and you become less selfish, less egotistic. In the absence of selfishness, love arises naturally. Many, many near-death experiencers, mediums, and other teachers say the purpose of life is to learn to love. Meditation helps you to accomplish that purpose.

Quieting the mental noise helps you become more aware of faint mental impressions some of which might be psychic perceptions. In particular, meditation calms the analytical mind letting you become more in touch with the intuitive mental processes. It makes you more receptive to psychic impressions such as intuitions and communication from spirits of departed loved ones and spirit guides.

Practice

Practicing is also important for developing psychic abilities. In order to become more proficient using psychic senses you also have to test them so you know when they are working correctly. The book Discover your Psychic Powers by Tara Ward includes methods of meditation and ways to practice and test your psychic abilities.

Unbalanced Rationality

One obstacle to developing psychic abilities that some people experience is that due to education or career they are so habituated to analytical thinking that they cannot stop thinking analytically. Psychic impressions come from a different part of the mind so if you can't stop thinking analytically, you may have difficulty perceiving psychic impressions. If you think this might be a problem for you, it might help to try to suspend your logical and reasoning attitudes toward being psychic. This does not mean you should embrace irrationality, it means you should try to withhold judgment and be open to observation rather than relying on analysis and thinking. Try to be an observer rather than an analyzer or an explainer. There is nothing wrong with having strong powers of analysis and logic. However those modes are not the only way to be conscious. What is ideal is to be good at all modes of consciousness and know when to use each one rather than being unbalanced or uniformly weak.

If you are too analytical in your thinking it might be hard to accept the meditation exercises needed for psychic development. However consider the two following points:

  1. In the spirit world, the spirits do things by using their mental abilities the way incarnated humans use tools. If you want to use your spiritual abilities you have to do it through a mental technique.
  2. When harnessing your psychic abilities, the most important thing is intention. You need a technique to focus and maintain your intention and the details of that technique are arbitrary.

At first these two points might seem to be contradictory or mutually exclusive, however in actuality they are reinforcing and complementary. So, follow psychic development techniques as taught, understanding them as explained above and that the techniques seem to have worked for others. Once you see they work, you no longer need to worry about whether they make sense or not.

Classes

Classes in psychic development are an excellent way to develop psychic abilities because they allow you to practice giving readings to other members of the class. Another advantage to taking classes is that the spirit guides of the instructor may sometimes assist the students to have a more profound psychic experience in class than they can have outside of class. This is particularly true in mediumship classes. Also, there can sometimes be an effect from being in a group of people that enhances psychic functioning of the members of the group.

You can usually find classes in psychic development at Spiritualist churches and sometimes at New Age book stores and gift shops. Psychic development classes usually meet once a week. Classes at Spiritualist churches will usually cost less while classes by a popular psychic could be expensive.

What to do about Poltergeist

Poltergeist phenomena involve things moving by themselves, sounds such as knocking or rapping, or inexplicable behavior or malfunction of electrical or electronic devices, as well as other types of mysterious phenomena.

When the phenomena happens at various locations but always in the presence of one particular person, it is usually the person causing the phenomenon unconsciously through psychokinesis (unconscious PK). In this case, there may be something causing the person to be emotionally upset that is causing them to produce the phenomenon. If you can figure out what is causing the emotional problem and eliminate it, the phenomenon may stop.

A well known example of unconscious PK producing poltergeist phenomena is the Tropican Arts poltergeist case in Miami, Florida. If you or someone you know is experiencing unconscious PK, this article might be helpful: How to cope with being psychic.

Unconscious PK is sometimes called the Pauli Effect because the Nobel prize winning physicist Wolfgang Pauli was known to wreck lab equipment just by walking through the laboratory door.

When poltergeist phenomenon happens in only one location and does not depend on the presence of any particular individual, it is probably caused by a spirit. If you can encourage the spirit to complete its transition to the spirit world the phenomena may stop.

If you think a spirit is causing poltergeist phenomena, this article might be helpful: How to get rid of spirits

Spiritual Practices and their Effectiveness

I recently made a post to an internet discussion forum where I described some of the spiritual practices I've tried and whether I found them to be effective. It may be of interest to readers of this blog. The post is this:

1. Why meditate? Is it effective in bringing about spiritual awareness?

Meditation calms the mind. This helps you live more mindfully, more in harmony with your spiritual values. Many, many NDEr's, mediums, and other teachers say the purpose of life is to learn to love. Meditation helps you to accomplish that purpose.

Quieting the mental noise helps you become more aware of faint mental impressions some of which might be psychic. In particular it calms the analytical mind letting you become more in touch with the intuitive mind. It makes you more receptive to contact from spirits such as departed loved ones and spirit guides.

2. What kind of spiritual practices have you been engaged in? Have they been effective or ineffective?

Turning off Stress - Learning to turn off the body's reaction to stress is helpful in spiritual development because when you are stressed, you are more likely to be thinking about yourself and your problems ie. being egocentric. But when you are relaxed, you are less likely to be thinking about yourself and more likely to be in harmony with spiritual values like love, kindness, forgiveness, tolerance etc.

The best way to turn off stress that I know of is to do exercises which involve gently moving or stretching your muscles while exhaling slowly as you count to ten. This technique is extremely effective because it combines four separate methods for activating the parasympathetic nervous system in one technique:

  • Deep Breathing
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Body Awareness
  • Meditation

Some other relaxation techniques such as guided meditations, visualizations, hypnotic inductions, etc. work by making you sleepy or putting you in an altered state of consciousness, and when you return to normal consciousness, the stress comes back. This technique works by turning off the body's stress response, and the effect stays with you long after you are done.

Meditation - this should be the primary practice for spiritual development. See above. Also I've had experiences of oneness, and higher planes of existence.

Some people don't like meditation for various reasons. One reason is that it may bring out buried emotions a person might not want to deal with. I've found relaxation exercises can be an effective alternative to meditation.

Other alternatives to meditation include practices that involve movement such as Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and yoga. There are many different forms of these exercises for different purposes. As an alternative to meditation, look for the simpler forms of Tai Chi (some times called tai chi for the mind, or energy tai chi), moving forms of Qi Gong, and yoga that involves positions that are not too strenuous. Other forms of these exercises are fine and they have valid but different uses. Anything that requires attention and is relaxing will help calm the mind and can yield benefits similar to meditation for spiritual development.

Spiritual Healing - besides for healing, this is a fundamental practice for development of mediumship because it involves healing guides and is a form of physical mediumship. I've used spiritual healing on myself with good results, and when I was studying for a certification in healing from my Spiritualist church I collected seven affidavits of healing by people who were helped. You don't have to be psychic to do this, anyone can learn to do spiritual healing.

Spirit Communication. I took classes in mediumship, and developed a method one can use if classes are not available. Classes were effective as described at the link. Working by myself has also been effective. I've used same technique successfully for remote viewing. (There are other techniques too, for people suffering from grief and connecting with your spirit guides. But I haven't tried all of these). (Also of interest: What is it like to communicate with spirits?)

Spirit communication is one of the easier forms of psychic perception - you don't have to rely entirely on your own power because the spirits make an effort to get through to you. The spirits influence you, you just need to learn to be open to and become aware of that influence. This is particularly true in a class where the spirits are well practiced in communicating and the teacher's guides help too. Everyone has spirit guides, everyone is influenced by their guides whether they are conscious of it or not. Therefore everyone is a medium. Many people can learn to become aware of the influence of spirits. Just like most people can learn to pick out a tune on the piano even if they will never be able to play in a concert hall, many people can have some perceptions of spirit communication even if they will never be able to be a working medium. The evidence for the afterlife is convincing, but when you interact what a spirit you know the afterlife is real in a way that leaves no room for doubt.

Qi Gong - to learn to feel different aspects of healing energy with your hands. You don't need to be psychic to do this.

Psychokinesis/Psi Wheel - Learn to measure the healing energy coming from your hands using a simple home made device. I have magnetized inanimate objects with healing energy and those objects have the ability to spin a psi-wheel.

You don't need to be psychic to use a psi wheel. It can be a way for many people to have a paranormal experience. Once you learn that ordinary people can know and experience things that Science denies it opens up a lot of possibilities. You realize there might be a lot more phenomena that are genuine but which materialists deny.

Spirit Rescue I give a sermon for earth bound spirits every morning and it has been effective in preventing annoying spirits from bothering me by encouraging them to complete their transition to the spirit planes. You don't have to be psychic to do this.

Precognition: When I started keeping a dream log, I noticed many precognitive dreams. According to J. W. Dunne author of An Experiment With Time most people will notice precognitive dreams if they keep a dream log. You don't have to be psychic to do this.

Chakra Meditation (sometimes called Kundalini meditation): This type of meditation is supposed to help with psychic development and releasing kundalini energy. I'm not sure if it has helped me in those areas but I use it as part of a system of relaxation (linked above) in which it is effective for attaining a deeply relaxed state.

Out of body experiences: From my own experiences and from Charles Tart's research I believe techniques to induce OBE's are not effective - they mostly produce dreams of OBE's. I think that spontaneous OBE's are closer to the "real thing".

Diet: I have found that a vegetarian diet is not effective except for making me sick. I do think the right diet is important in spiritual development.

Ouija Board: Not effective.

Reading about and discussing spiritual topics - including parapsychology and philosophy also can play a role. I think it can be extremely helpful. But I would like to encourage people to do more than just approach the issue of spirituality with their intellect. Click on some of the links in this post and try meditation, or relaxation exercises, or make a psi wheel, or do qi gong, or keep a dream log. Understanding through experience is different from understanding through intellect. Don't limit yourself, don't except self-limiting doubts about what you can experience. Try.

What to do about Unwanted Spirit Contact: How to Help Spirits Complete Their Transition to the Spirit World

I've been following the posts on the AskParanormal subreddit on reddit.com where there are many posts by people asking for help with unwanted contacts from spirits. This post is a summary of my advice on how to deal with unwanted spirit contact.

There are two main forms of unwanted spirit phenomena:

  1. Objective phenomena - when the spirit causes phenomena that anyone can observe such as noises, moving furniture, or turning on and off electrical or electronic devices.

  2. Subjective phenomena - when the spirit causes phenomena that only one person can observe, such as telepathic communications, visions of the spirit, or some cases of sleep paralysis.

The way to deal with the two types phenomena are very similar but not exactly alike.

One important difference is that subjective phenomenon may make the experiencer wonder if he is just imagining it or if he might be suffering from a mental illness. This is a serious and valid concern and is best answered by a psychologist who has experience helping people with spiritual problems. It may be possible to locate a such a psychologist by asking a local psychic in your town for a referral. You can often get such a referral through a Spiritualist church or a New Age book shop or gift shop. There is also a list of mental health professionals who specialize in spiritual and psychic issues.

Another difference is that objective phenomena may sometimes be caused by unintended psychokinesis (PK) from a living person. More about this is discussed in the links below What to do about Poltergeist and How to cope with being psychic.

In the most difficult cases it may be necessary to get help from a reputable psychic or medium who has experience dealing with troublesome spirits. However in many cases you can deal with the situation yourself.

If you want to try to stop the spirit activity yourself, tell the spirit:

  1. That they are dead. (The spirit might be lingering on the earth plane because they do not realize they are dead).

  2. You understand they are trying to communicate and you are aware of them. (If you think the spirit is a deceased friend or relative it may be important to them that you recognize their attempts at communication, they may be trying to say "hello" or "good bye" in the only way they can.)

  3. But they must leave you alone.

  4. (If the spirit is there when you move into a new home, tell them) the home is yours now, not theirs, and they have to leave.

  5. They should complete their transition to the spirit world. If they linger, alone, around the earth plane where there is nothing for them to do they will just stagnate. They will be happier if they complete the transition because they will be with like minded spirits and will have things to do.

Be firm but friendly, try to express concern for the spirit's well being. Keep repeating the above when you sense the presence of the spirit if they don't leave right away.

Prayer is also an important component of dealing with these types of situations:

  • Pray for angels or spirit guides to help the earthbound spirit complete their transition to the spirit world. There are advanced beings around that want to help us but they need a request from us before they can act. (See the link to Spirit Rescue below).

  • Praying for protection may also be effective, particularly for subjective phenomena. You can pray for protection in this way: "Oh God please watch over me and protect me so that only the highest and best forces can influence me." Some people also visualize a shield of white light surrounding and protecting them.

An example of how to handle a troublesome spirit can be found in this post. A more elaborate method can be found at Spirit Rescue on my web site. You don't have to follow the script in Spirit Rescue exactly. If you are not comfortable with certain parts, you may adapt it to your particular situation.

"Evil Entities"

Most of the "evil entities" that are thought to cause hauntings and possessions and cause other mischief are not demons but the spirits of humans who have not made a full transition to the spirit world. Sometimes spirits do cause problems but much of the problem is our own fear. When a spirit frightens us or has a negative attitude that seems repellent, we may mistake our feelings of fear for a perception of evil. However, you are more likely to die of a heart attack from your own fear than from anything a ghost might actually do. Often the spirit is not really evil, but just grumpy or mischievous and our lack of understanding causes us to overreact. Spirits may try to communicate the only way they can, by flashing the lights, shutting a door, or raping on the walls, which frightens most people who are inexperienced in dealing with spirits. But, try to imagine what it is like for a spirit trying to reassure a grieving loved one they are still near by when the person reacts in horror. This is caused by the prejudice in our society against spirits which is caused by ghost stories and horror movies.

Some books that may be helpful include:

  • Books by Echo Bodine such as Relax It's Only a Ghost. Echo Bodine is a medium who clears haunted houses.

  • The Unquiet Dead by Edith Fiori. Edith Fiori is a psychologist who helps patients experiencing subjective phenomena by talking to the spirit while the patient is hypnotized.

  • Thirty Years Among the Dead by Dr. Carl Wickland. Dr. Carl Wickland worked with mental patients and found many of them were being influenced by spirits. (If this link doesn't work, try using google to find it elsewhere on the internet.)

How to Communicate with Spirits

This post is about methods you can use to communicate with spirits by yourself without the help of a psychic medium. The techniques include methods for:

  • Communicating with recently departed loved ones.
  • Easy techniques for communicating with your spirit guides.
  • Techniques to develop a general ability to communicate with spirits.

Summary of techniques:

  • Techniques to communicate with a recently departed loved one. If you have recently lost a loved one and want to hear from them, these techniques might be of help.
    • Do-it-yourself Techniques
      • Self-guided Afterlife Connections.
      • Asking a spirit to come to you in a dream.
      • After Death Communication (ADC) includes a number of ways a spirit might contact you including signs, and various other types of direct and indirect communication.
    • Techniques that involve a facilitator.
      • Guided Afterlife Connections

  • Easy Methods for communicating with your spirit guides.
    • Meditating on a question for your spirit guides.
    • Ask your guides to answer your questions while you sleep.
    • Audio programs such as those produced by John Edward.

  • Techniques for the development of a general ability to communicate with spirits. If you want to increase your sensitivity to spirit communications and/or if you want to communicate with many different spirits, try these techniques. However, be aware that they require a long term commitment of time and effort to achieve results.
    • Take classes in mediumship.
    • Communicating in the hypnogogic state.
    • Practice spiritual healing.
    • Stream of consciousness writing.
    • Tune in to universal love to raise your vibrational rate.

The techniques are described in more detail below but keep in mind these points which apply to all techniques:

  • It will be easier to connect with spirits if you approach communication in a cheerful, loving manner.
  • When you are trying to communicate with spirits, don't just wait for them to communicate with you. That is like dialing the phone and only listening. You have to participate in the conversation. When communicating with spirits, you should ask them questions as well as listen for answers.
  • If possible try to obtain veridical information, that is information that you don't know but can verify. That will help you validate that the information is not coming from your own wishful thinking. When you try to obtain veridical information ask open ended questions rather than yes/no or multiple choice type questions. With open ended questions that you have no preconceived ideas about, there will be less possibility of your own thoughts interfering with any communications that may be coming from a spirit.

Methods for communicating with a recently departed loved one.

On a couple of discussion forums that I read, I recently noticed posts about two new methods for communicating with spirits. One is a do-it-yourself technique, Self-guided Afterlife Connections, and another makes use of a therapist to perform a Guided Afterlife Connection. Both of these methods are being promoted by Craig Hogan who was a co-author of Induced After-death Communications, a book he wrote with Allan Bodkin. Craig also wrote Your Eternal Self which is about evidence for the afterlife.

Guided Afterlife Connections seem to be an out growth of induced after-death communication (IADC) which is a therapy developed by Allan Bodkin, a Veteran's Administration psychologist, that helps patients with post traumatic stress syndrome. The therapy allows the patient to communicate with the spirits of those who's death was involved in the traumatic experience of the patient.

The Self-guided Afterlife Connection web site describes that method of communicating with spirits. It seems to be a guided meditation / hypnotic induction to connect with a lost loved one. The Self-guided Afterlife Connection method also prepares the student with information on what to expect during communication and that is very helpful - many people don't recognize spirit communications because they don't know what to expect.

This type of communication can work well if you want confirmation that your loved one is not really dead but still continuing to exist in the afterlife. It can also be helpful if you need to settle any unfinished business like apologies or something like that.

Another technique you use can try to establish a connection with a recently departed loved one is to ask them to come to you in a dream. Do this as you are falling asleep and they may connect with you in a dream.

After Death Communication (ADC) includes a number of ways a spirit might spontaneously contact you. This includes signs, and various other types of direct and indirect communication. More information about this is available at after-death.com

However, keep in mind that you can't guarantee that any particular spirit will be willing to communicate with you. Some spirits have other things to do and higher levels to move on to. Some spirits will not want you to be too attached to their memory because it might prevent you from moving past your grief, or it might prevent you from forming new relationships. John Edward wrote in one of his books that he had to wait for a long time before his deceased mother came through to him, and she did it through another medium, not to him directly. One of the forum posters discussing the self-guided afterlife connection also explained elsewhere on that forum that even though they had some success with that technique, they still wanted more communication with the deceased and were not getting it. If you try any of these techniques, have realistic expectations.

Quick Techniques for Communicating with Your Spirit Guides

You can ask your spirit guides to communicate with you when you are asleep and then when you wake up you may find the answers to your questions. This method was described by the user Anderw at afterlifeforums.com:

Now, onto your question: The type of beings that you are most likely to communicate with are your spirit guides. But you won't communicate with them through visual or auditory means most likely. It will be a subtle type of mental communication - essentially telepathy. You should have a good reason to contact them. Just doing it to do it probably will not yield much result. If you want to contact them, then think about whatever it is wish to ask them, and meditate/think on it a bit right before bed. Then, pay attention to the first thoughts you have when you wake up the next morning. You may not get/remember anything right away, but you'll get advice if it is beneficial to you!

The reason why it is most effective to do this at night is because we actually seem to travel (astrally) to the afterlife levels during sleep most nights. Therefore we consult with our guides, as well as relax and learn. For this reason, it is actually best to sleep on any major decisions, and see how you feel in the morning.

Meditate on a question for your spirit guides by repeating the question to like a mantra.

One very simple way of communicating with your spirit guides is to sit in meditation and try to concentrate on a question addressed to your spirit guides and notice the thoughts and impressions that occur when your mind wanders from concentrating on the question. This technique can become particularly effective if you develop your sensitivity by using some of the techniques in the following section.

Techniques for the development of a general ability to communicate with spirits.

If you are serious about developing a general ability to perceive communications from spirits you have to 1) have spirits who are willing to communicate with you over the long term, and 2) develop your sensitivity to faint mental impressions and sensations.

Ways to develop a general ability to communicate with spirits include:

  • Take classes in mediumship.
  • Communicating with spirits in the hypnogogic state.
  • Practice spiritual healing.
  • Stream of consciousness writing.
  • Tune in to universal love to raise your vibrational rate.

Whichever methods you use, this will be a long term project. It will involve developing your awareness of and increasing your sensitivity to faint mental impressions. You will work with spirits by asking questions and and listening for their answers.

Take classes in mediumship.

One option for developing your ability to communicate with spirits is to take classes in mediumship where you can practice giving readings to your classmates. An advantage of classes is that obtaining veridical information is built in to the process. When you give your classmates a reading they will tell you if they recognize the spirit. I've described my experiences taking classes in mediumship at a Spiritualist church here and I provided more details here. I also include information on taking classes in mediumship on my web site on the page I link to in the next section that describes how to communicate with spirits from the hyponogogic state.

If you can't find mediumship classes in your area, or if they are too expensive, or if you prefer to learn by yourself, you can also learn to communicate with spirits on your own.

Practice communicating in the hypnogogic state.

I have described a technique I use for learning on my own on my web site. In this method, you learn to enter the hypnogogic state in which the mind is naturally receptive to psychic phenomena.

Practice spiritual healing.

The technique I use for learning on my own (linked above) includes a method of developing spiritual healing abilities because spiritual healing is a form of physical mediumship that involves the participation of spirit healing guides.

Practice stream of consciousness writing.

Anything that helps you get in touch with faint mental impressions or that helps unconscious thoughts to rise into your conscious awareness can be used to develop your sensitivity to spirit communication because, for most people, that type of communication is naturally subliminal. Most people do not consciously recognize the influence of their spirit guides but that influence exists nonetheless and influences their conscious mind. This is why the technique above, communicating from the hypnogogic state works. In the hypnogogic state, your normal waking mind is subdued and you become aware of mental activity that you would not ordinarily perceive. Another technique to get in touch with your unconscious thoughts is described on my web page Communicating With Spirit Guides Through Writing. When you practice this technique, you write whatever comes to your mind. The objective is to let your thoughts flow without inhibiting them, analyzing them or judging them. The purpose is to practice letting thoughts flow from your unconscious mind to your conscious mind freely.

Tune in to universal love to raise your vibrational rate.

Positive emotions like happiness and love, particularly love for the spirit, will make it easier for the spirit to get through to you. My web page on meditation includes a method of Tapping into Universal Love which can help you raise your vibrational rate and improve your communications with spirits.

A Synthesis of Spiritual Healing and Qi Gong

Here is a way to practice self healing, distant healing, and healing for the world that combines elements of spiritual healing and qi gong. The purpose of the exercise is to develop the ability to bring healing energy through you for healing for yourself and others, and also to develop the ability to feel the healing energy. Before doing this exercise you should read my web page on Spiritual Healing. For more information on qi gong you may read Spiritual Healing Development with Qi Gong,
Sensing the Qualities of Qi, and
Sensing the Qualities of Qi (part 2).

The "Sending Out" and "Bringing In" Positions

  • Stand comfortably in a natural posture with your arms at your sides. Your weight should be balanced between the balls of your feet and your heels. Your weight should not be too far forward toward your toes or too far backward on your heels. Don't worry getting it exactly right but it should be balanced so you require the least effort in the muscles of your ankles to remain upright. Your feet can be approximately shoulder width apart. A little less is okay but they should not be too close together. The knees may be slightly bent or straight. Keeping the knees straight will put less strain on them. Bending them slightly will help loosen and straighten the spine.

  • Bend your elbows so that the back of your hands come up to your shoulders. Then move your hands away from you and down by relaxing your elbows to about 45 degrees (or whatever feels comfortable) with your palms turned away from you. Your fingers should be straight but you don't have to strain to make them perfectly straight. The fingers should spread naturally, don't force them apart or together. This is the "sending out" position.

  • Turn your hands so that the palms are facing toward you. This is the "bringing in" position.

  • As you do the exercise below, you may feel your posture improving. If you tend to slump your shoulders, you may find your back straightening. This is nothing to be concerned about, let it happen naturally. Don't force it or strain or maintain an unnatural or uncomfortable posture.

  • This exercise can also be done sitting down, moving the arms and hands as described for the standing posture.

The stick figure below depicts both the "sending out" and "bringing in" positions.

The Exercise

  1. Stand in the "bringing in" position (with palms facing you), and pray silently, "Oh God, please may I have healing energy to give me healing for the highest good". Say this two or three times so it is clearly impressed in your mind as you say it. While you are doing that, imagine healing energy coming down into you from above into your head and hands.

  2. Next, bring your hands in front of your chest so that the palms are facing each other. Slowly move your palms together until they are as close as you can get them without them touching. Your finger tips might be as close as one millimeter apart. Then, slowly move your right hand away while leaving the left hand stationary. When you have moved your right hand about eight inches, pause. Then slowly return the right hand to where it was so it is close to the left hand, palms facing each other. Pause. Repeat this a few times noticing any sensations in your finger tips or the palms of your hands. Repeat this moving the left hand and keeping the right hand stationary. Pay close attention to the sensation in the stationary hand.

  3. Cup both hands as if you were holding a ball approximately four inches in diameter or whatever size feels comfortable. If you have large hands it might be bigger, if you have small hands it might be smaller. Now turn your hands, still "holding the ball" so one is on top and the other is on the bottom. Notice any sensations in the bottom hand. Turn your hands so the other is on top and the other is on the bottom and notice any sensations in the bottom hand. You can do this once or twice or more if you want to.

  4. Throughout the following steps, hold your hands an inch or two or slightly more away from your body without actually touching it. Notice any sensations in your hands or your body where you move your hands near it. In particular, pay attention to these sensations as your hands pass over the top of the head, the forehead, the face, temples, the nape of the neck, the shoulders, the front of the throat, the heart, the solar plexus, the abdomen below the navel, and the root chakra.

  5. Move your hands to the top of your head with the palms facing the top of your head. Notice any sensations in your hands or the top of your head. This step and the following steps can all be done in one continuous flowing motion, there is no need to stop in between steps.

  6. Slowly move your hands down in front of your face, noticing any sensations.

  7. Move your hands to the sides of your head so your palms are facing your ears.

  8. Move your hands back so your palms are facing the back of your neck where the neck and shoulders meet. As you notice any sensations, also imagine energy flowing from your hands down your spine to the base of the spine.

  9. Move your hands outward along your shoulders with your palms facing downward (horizontally).

  10. Move your hands with the palms facing toward you vertically so they are in front of your throat. As in the other steps in the exercise, notice any sensation in your hands or the part of the body the hands are facing.

  11. Move your hands downward so that the palms pass over your breasts, and continue down past the solar plexus and the lower abdomen.

  12. Move your hands downward across the pelvis, and down the thighs until your hands are in front of your thighs and your elbows are straight. As your hands pass down your thighs point the palms toward your knees and feet and imagine healing energy flowing from your hands down your legs and to your knees and feet.

  13. Bend your elbows to bring your hands up to the "sending out" position. Imagine healing energy coming down into your head and hand and pray silently, "Oh God, please move healing energy through me to where it's needed for the highest good." If there are any people you would like to send healing to, continue praying, "And please move healing energy to [name the people you would like to receive distant healing] to give them healing for their highest good."

  14. Turn your palms back toward yourself in the "bringing in" position and repeat the entire exercise as many times as you like. Continuing for ten minutes is a suggestion.

When you do this exercise you may feel a lot of energy coming into you when you are in the "bringing in" position. You might also feel warmth coming from your hands as you move them close to your skin, particularly when they are in front of your face and in back of your neck. As your hands pass over some of the chakras you may feel sensations in the chakras.

If you are interested in psychic development, after doing this exercise you can do Exercise 3 or Exercise 4 on my web page A Natural Method for Learning To Communicate with Spirits. Substitute this exercise for the meditation portions of those exercises. After you finish this exercise, lie down and try to go into the hypnogogic state as described in those exercises. You should read the entire page, if you haven't already done so, before you start exercise 3 or 4.

When you are in the beginning stages of learning this technique, you may spend more time on steps 1, 2, and 3 in order to concentrate on learning to feel the healing energy.

You can customize this technique for self healing, by eliminating step 13 or by doing only step 1 for the entire session.

Another form of mental healing involves visualizing your immune cells winning a fight against harmful viruses, bacteria, or cancer cells. One way to do this is to visualize your immune cells engulfing and destroying, for example, any harmful virus particles in your body. You can combine this with the self-healing techniques described above, for example, in step 1. You can even visualize the healing energy adding power to your immune cells to help them in their fight.

There is quite a lot of similarity between qi gong and spiritual healing. Qi gong is usually done standing up as is spiritual healing. The sending out position is similar to a qi gong posture and is also similar to the way spiritual healing is given where the hands placed on the shoulders of the recipient.

How to Cope with Being Psychic

Overview

Many people imagine that psychic abilities such as being able to talk to spirits or knowing the future can have a lot of advantages. However being psychic can also cause problems too. It can cause someone to feel different, isolated, confused, and at times it can be frightening.

The remedy for these difficulties is knowledge. If being psychic is causing problems for you, learn as much as you can about being psychic and what other people have experienced. When you know more about the kinds of phenomena that can occur, that there are other people who have the same experiences, how to control them where possible, and how to use them, you will begin to feel more comfortable with psychic experiences.

In particular, learning about the following subjects can make it easier to cope with being psychic:

However, there are limits to what can be accomplished by an article like this. If you are having problems caused by having psychic experiences and want to seek help from a mental health professional who has experience dealing with psychic and spiritual problems, there is a list of such professionals here.

Introduction

There are a wide variety of psychic abilities. If you are psychic, you might see and hear spirits, or sense them in other ways. You might have intuitions about future events. You might know what other people are going to say before they say it. Objects around you might move for no apparent reason, or electrical equipment may malfunction. You might have dreams of future events that come to pass, or dreams of events at distant locations that you can confirm. You might feel the emotions other people are feeling, or have other types of paranormal experiences.

If psychic phenomenon is not something you have studied before, you may feel alone, confused and frightened by this. If you don't know anyone else who is psychic and you have not read anything about being psychic you might not understand why or how you experience what you do. If you find yourself developing psychic abilities suddenly and unexpectedly, it can be confusing and frightening. Some people may wonder if being psychic is demonic, sinful, or a symptom of mental illness. Friends and family may be wondering the same thing. Peers, friends and family members may not believe psychic phenomena are possible, or they may have negative reactions to psychic phenomena. These things may cause someone who is psychic to feel confused, frightened, isolated, or abnormal.

This article is intended to help you learn to cope with psychic experiences and it is based on my knowledge of the difficulties experienced by people with psychic abilities. I have met many people who developed psychic abilities because I have been a member of several different Spiritualist churches. Spiritualist church services usually include a demonstration of mediumship and many of the people who attend the services are psychic too. Spiritualist churches usually offer classes in mediumship and healing and I have attended those types of classes so I have some experience with psychic abilities myself. I have also communicated over the internet with many people who have developed psychic abilities and I am currently a moderator of the Psychic Support Forum. This article discusses subjects you can learn about that will help you cope with being psychic and includes links to other articles with more information on many of these subjects.

If you are the parent of a child who has psychic abilities, you should also become familiar with this information and try to explain it to your child in a way he can understand. You should also understand that there is nothing evil about being psychic, many people have these kinds of experiences. If your child reports psychic experiences, react to them as if they were ordinary. You should not discourage your child or punish him for being psychic, but don't treat his psychic experiences as something very special either because you don't want to encourage your child to make up stories. You should also try to explain to your child that other people might not understand about his being psychic so he should be careful about who he talks to about his abilities.

If having psychic abilities is causing problems for you, there are several areas that you should learn more about:

How to Control the Phenomena.

Section Contents

Unfortunately, many psychics never develop the ability to completely shut down the phenomena or to turn them on at will. However there are things you can do to develop some control over them.

General Techniques

  • Meditation If you are not a regular meditator you might try meditation because it can be calming and relaxing and this may help you cope better with your experiences. However be aware that meditation can also make one more psychically receptive because it quiets the analytical mind allowing greater awareness of the intuitive mind. If you are a meditator and you want to reduce your psychic receptivity you might try doing less meditation or stopping it completely.

  • Listen to music. Listening to music can distract you from psychic perceptions when you don't want to be aware of them. If necessary turn the volume up but use head phones so you don't disturb the people around you and don't play the music so loud that you damage your hearing.

  • Practice using your abilities deliberately. If you can learn to use your abilities when you want to, you may also improve your ability to not use them when you don't want to. This may help reduce spontaneous occurrences.

  • Pray for guidance, assistance and protection. If you are not comfortable praying, you should try it anyway. When you are dealing with spiritual phenomena you must use the tools of spirituality. Just tell God what is bothering you or what you want. If you want help from divine or spiritual forces, often you have to ask for it before it can be given. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Part of spiritual maturity is understanding your part in the hierarchy of advanced beings helping less advanced beings. This means you should help other people when you can, but it also means it is your responsibility to ask for help when you need it. Cooperation, working together to accomplish something that cannot be done by an individual, is one of the most important spiritual values. Cooperation includes asking for help when you need it. Obviously, not every prayer will be answered but it is still useful for keeping communication open, for maintaining spiritual contact with the higher planes.

    • The most powerful prayer is to ask to be shown how to do something. This is almost always more effective than asking to be given something.

    • A good prayer for protection is: "Oh God, please watch over me and protect me so that only the highest and best forces can influence me."

When you ask a question in prayer, try to be open to receiving an answer when you pray, but also understand an answer may come later when you might be more receptive or when circumstances can provide a symbolic answer or some other type of sign.

  • In extreme cases medication may be helpful in curbing psychic perceptions.

Sensing Spirits

  • How to Get Rid of Spirits

  • If you are hearing voices, talk back politely.

  • If you are sensing the presence of spirits, understand that you can be an active participant in the communication. You don't have to be a passive, silent observer:

    • If you would prefer the spirits to leave you alone, politely but firmly tell the spirits to stay away from you. If it is just an inconvenient time and you wouldn't mind if the spirit came back later, say so. If you don't like a certain spirit and want him to stay away permanently, say so. When you speak to spirits you can do it mentally, like with prayer, you don't have to speak out loud.

    • If the spirits are doing something you don't like, you should tell them, they may not realize the effect they are having on you. One medium I knew was so sensitive that when the spirits tried to explain to her how they died, it could be very unpleasant. She felt what they felt causing their death too strongly. She had to learn to tell the spirits not to communicate so intensely. The spirits didn't realize how they were affecting her but they would be more sensitive when she explained what the problem was.

    • Don't do something just because you think a spirit told you to do it. It is your life and you are here to learn from experiencing the consequences of your actions. Spirits may remind you of factors to consider, but they should not be giving you too much advice about how to run your life. Not every spirit has your best intentions in mind, and sometimes it is possible to misunderstand a spirit or to mistake an ordinary phenomena for a psychic perception (see below).

  • Suggestions on how to handle possession.

Psychokinesis

If you are experiencing objects moving unexpectedly, hearing raps, or electrical equipment is turning on or off or otherwise malfunctioning, this may be due to unconscious psychokinesis (PK). If these phenomena are restricted to one location, and or do not depend on the presence of any one person, they may be caused by a spirit. If the phenomena seem to occur in different locations and only occur when you are present it is more likely to be psychokinesis. Psychokinesis is often a consequence of emotional upsets and dealing with the issues that are upsetting you may reduce the occurrence of unconscious PK.

  • You can also try to use a psi wheel to develop control over psychokinesis. The linked article describes how make a psi wheel and turn it by placing your hand near it. If you can turn the wheel without placing your hand near it, practice that way.

Empathy: Sensing the Feelings and Emotions of Others

  • Try to continue your daily routine and keep busy as much as possible so that your mind will be filled with mundane thoughts.

  • Try sending spiritual healing energy to the person you are sensing the feelings of. The way you can do that is explained here: Spiritual Healing: You Can Do It. Taking practical steps to help the situation may make you feel better about it.

  • Visualize a shield of white light surrounding yourself that protects you from outside emotions and feelings.

  • Pray for, or ask your spirit guides for, help shielding you, or to help you understand how to shield yourself. I have found that asking to be shown how to do something myself is one of the most effective forms of prayer. Try to listen for an answer immediately after asking, but also be aware the answer might come later at an odd moment when you might be particularly receptive to perceiving it. See the section on Prayer for more information.

Psychic Self-defense

My article on psychic-self defense has additional information and links that may be helpful.

Phenomena that Might not be Psychic

Learn to distinguish between genuine psychic phenomenon and ordinary phenomenon that may appear to be psychic. People who are psychic are more likely to confuse ordinary phenomenon with psychic phenomenon, Because they have so many psychic experiences, psychics have a low threshold for accepting that something is psychic. There are two phenomenon you should be aware of that are relatively common and while they may seem psychic they may not be. Just like sometimes dreams may be precognitive or be communications from spirits but many dreams are not psychic at all, the first two phenomenon below may or may not be psychic.

  • Sleep paralysis

  • Hypnopomic hallucinations - are hallucinations that occur when waking up from sleep. They may seem very real but you should be suspicious of any type of psychic perception that occurs immediately upon waking, it may not be a psychic perception at all but just a hallucination.

  • Hallucinations

  • Fears or wishful thinking. One common mistake beginners make is that they confuse their own fears or wishful thinking with psychic perceptions. It can take a bit of experience to tell the difference. Genuine psychic perceptions are usually a type of "knowing" without emotional content. You might react emotionally to the information but your sense of the information does not come from an emotional part of your mind.

Understanding, accepting and finding purpose in having psychic abilities.

  • Understand that you are not alone and that many other people have had these experiences.

  • Learn more about the evidence for the afterlife.

  • Learn more about the evidence for ESP and some of the different types of psychic perception.

  • Learn more about what it means to be psychic and what people like you experience.

    • Get to know other people who have had psychic experiences.

      • The Psychic Support Forum is an on-line forum where you can meet other psychics and people who are interested in psychic phenomena and discuss anything you want.

      • Spiritualist churches are a good place to meet other psychics. The services usually include a demonstration of mediumship and offer spiritual healing to those in attendance who desire it. Spiritualism is a very tolerant and undogmatic religion. You can be any other religion or even an atheist and still go to Spiritualist services. There is often a social hour after the services for people to meet and get to know each other. Spiritualist churches also usually offer classes in mediumship and spiritual healing.

      • IANDS The International Association for Near-Death Studies has local groups in many locations. People who have near-death experiences often have psychic experiences too.

      • You may be able to meet other psychic on-line through Internet discussion forums.

    • Read biographies of psychics so you can learn about what other psychics have experienced and how they coped with it.

    • Reading about scientific studies and other investigations of psychic phenomenon can also be helpful.

    • Here are some web sites and blogs with articles on psychic phenomena:

  • Find meaning in your abilities.

    • Some psychics learn to use their abilities to help other people by giving psychic readings, helping people to communicate with spirits, or giving spiritual healings. If you want to use your abilities to help other people, you should find a competent teacher who can help you develop your abilites and guide you on how to use them ethically and responsibly.

    • Some psychics find meaning in their abilities by studying them scientifically to contribute to humankind's understanding of the phenomena. If you become involved with scientists studying paranormal phenomena, make sure they have a set of guidelines on the ethical treatment of human subjects in scientific experiements. Read and understand those guidelines. Know if your privacy and anonymity will be respected. Also find out if the investigator will profit from your participation through books and lectures about his research on you. Avoid any type of public contest or challange designed to prove the reality of paranormal phenomena. The mass media and skeptical organizations are not interested in helping psychics. They are interested in promoting themselves.

Further reading on participating in research:

How it is Possible for People to Have Psychic Abilities.

It is possible for you to have psychic experiences because a human being is a spirit incarnated in a physical body. Psychic abilities are abilities that come from our spiritual nature. They are the abilities we have before we are born into the physical world and that we will have again when we leave the physical world after the death of the body. People who have near-death experiences experience expanded consciousness while they are out of their bodies and experience many types of psychic phenomena such as precognition, clairvoyance, and spirit communication. For most people, the brain filters out these abilities while they are in the body but in some cases these abilities make it through and we have access to them while we are incarnated.

Why do Spirits Communicate Symbolically?

Last week, I blogged about what it is like to communicate with spirits. That post was based on some conversations that took place on an internet discussion forum. At about the same time on the forum there was a thread from someone who wanted to know why spirits communicated symbolically rather than with words. This is how I replied ...

Many mediums can receive communications from spirits best if the spirits show them a picture, so most spirits will try to communicate with a picture. However spirits don't communicate with pictures of words very often. It does happen sometimes but very rarely.

Part of the difficulty is that letters are very familiar and there are a finite number of them. It seems to be true for all types of psychic perception that the more open ended the possibilities for perception the less interference there will be from the mind of the psychic. (Charles Tart discusses this in his book Learning ESP) For example, remote viewing is easier than guessing zener cards because in remote viewing the possibilities are unlimited but zener cards are limited to 5 possibilities.

If you take cards from a deck of playing cards and try guess which are red and which are black without looking at them, you already know what the two possibilities are. The mind tends to be very active and hard to control. If I say don't think about a pink elephant, most people will think about a pink elephant. If you are trying to guess cards you will likely be thinking about different cards. These thoughts are likely to drown out your psychic perceptions. Your thinking about the next card might drown out any faint psychic perception you might have of it. You also know the color of the next card might be the same as the color of the previous card so you may confuse your thoughts and memories of the previous card with your psychic perception of the next card.

However, if a spirit is communicating with images of real world objects, a medium will have no idea what is coming next, he will have nothing to base a guess upon, and he is less likely to think about what might come next, and therefore is less likely to confuse his own thinking with a psychic perception. He would also not expect the next image to be related to the previous image so it would be unlikely that he would confuse his memory and thoughts about the previous image with his psychic perception of the next image.

An image usually comprises an entire concept. But if you were seeing images of words it could require several words to communicate a concept. Your thoughts, assumptions, memories, associations, and inferences that arise from the meaning of previous words and clauses could influence your expectations about what the next word would be and you could confuse that expectation with your psychic perception of the next word. If the spirits tried to communicate by showing pictures of letters, the medium would likely be thinking about and visualizing words and letters, trying to guess the next letter based on the letters of the word already shown or the next word based on the words of the sentence already shown. It would be harder for the spirit's communication to be perceived over the noise.

When spirits communicate with pictures, the picture can very often be interpreted literally. When I would communicate with a spirit, I would usually see them as they looked in life. They would show me pictures of things they did, what their house looked like, where they worked etc. These types of images helped the sitter to identify the spirit.

However, spirits will use symbols when the thing they want to communicate cannot be represented with a literal picture.
Some things can't be described with a simple picture but can sometimes be communicated with symbols. Names are one example of this. One time I was getting a reading and the medium brought through my uncle. He showed the medium a picture of a snowy field which I recognized as the name of the town he lived in: White Planes. (This is why it is important for a medium to report exactly what they perceive and not try to interpret it. Usually the sitter will know what is being communicated symbolically and how to interpret it. If the medium saw the snow and said something like "snow was meaningful in the spirit's life" it would not have made any sense to me. I have had many readings by inexperienced mediums who provided a lot of evidential material but wove it into a story of their own creation that had nothing to do with reality.)

There are also many occasions when a spirit will communicate something without using a picture. Once when I was giving a reading, a spirit named Rose identified herself to me by making me smell roses. Another time I was giving a reading and the spirit identified his cause of death by inducing me to place my hand under my neck and close my hand. This helped the sitter to recognize the spirit as a cousin who died by hanging himself since the gesture I made was like I was grasping a rope around my neck.

Some spirits do communicate with letters but it requires a special development process that few mediums go through.

It involves a ouija board which I don't recommend anyone use. The ouija board is a form of physical mediumship and if you open yourself to the influence of spirits there is a possibility that "undeveloped" spirits can influence you. In general, like attracts like, if you are using the ouija board as a joke for vulgar entertainment you are likely to attract vulgar spirits that might like to play jokes and tricks on you.

If your intentions are of a high spiritual nature you will likely attract highly developed spirits. However with physical mediumship there is no real guarantee that the good spirits can keep the bad spirits away. There are many cases in the history of physical mediumship where the good spirits were not able to prevent such interference. It often takes a team of spirits to work with a physical medium, some of whom act as spiritual bouncers to keep away the etheric riff-raff. There must be a strong karmic purpose for your mediumship in order to justify an entire team of spirits working with you.

(In mental mediumship, you are in direct mental contact with the spirit and it is easier to recognize the personality traits of the spirit - with physical mediumship they just control your body so it is much easier for them to fool you.)

There are cases where very proficient mediums got started with a ouija board, but there is some risk to it. After using the ouija board for a time the medium may begin to know in advance what the next letter is going to be and she can just say or write it rather than use the ouija board. Later she may begin to know what the next word is going to be and she can stop spelling out the words. Eventually she may develop into a full trance medium.

There are a couple of free ebooks about excellent mediums who got started with the ouija board:

The Betty Book and Our Unseen Guest. Both are available at:
http://www.spiritwritings.com/library.html. Unfortunately, this site seems to go down frequently. If the site is not up and you want to download the books you might try to use a search engine to see if they are available elsewhere on the internet.

The Betty Book:

"As with numerous others, our interest in the ouija board began quite casually. On the date I have mentioned, some friends called on us bringing one of these with them. They had bought it as a toy, to try Out,without belief that anything in particular would happen to it.

...

But once, in the middle of our laughter and buffooning, the glass moved with a sharp quick decision as though impatient, in striking contrast to its customary fumbling.

"Why do you ask foolish questions?" it spelled.

Those sitting at the board denied having anything to do with this: it was too apropos! Nevertheless we suspected them, and they suspected each other.

....

Next our attention was caught by the repeated spelling out of the name Betty. Now there was present a young woman nicknamed Betty. She was standing in front of the fireplace after a very brief trial at the board-and a somewhat scornful trial at that. We insisted that she was being paged and that she must try again. She was reluctant, thinking this merely an attempt of those sitting to lure her back into the game, but finally yielded and took her place.

Immediately her fingers touched the glass it began to move in circles. Around and around it went, faster and faster until she and her partner could hardly keep their fingers on it. So comically like a dog frisking in delight was it that we all burst into laughter.

"It's glad to get Betty," said we."

Our Unseen Guest

OUR first experience with psychic phenomena occurred on the evening of December 7, 1916---by way of a ouija board. Neither Joan nor I had ever seen a ouija board before. The "toy" came into our hands quite by accident. We were taking our dinners at a private boardinghouse some blocks from the apartment building in which we lived. On the evening in question a sudden storm blew off the lake, while we were at table, and after the meal Joan and I wandered into a deserted sitting room to wait until the wind and sleet abated. There one of the resident guests had left the ouija, a remnant doubtless of some Halloween party.

"How does the thing work?" Joan asked.

I read the directions; we rested the board, whereon the alphabet was printed in two semicircles upon our knees, and put the tips of our fingers on the flatiron like pointer.

"Now," said I, "this tripod affair is supposed to move from letter to letter, spelling out a message."

Thus we sat for a period---ten minutes, perhaps. We joked, I remember, of the good fortunes ouija would tell us. But no message came. Then, just as we were about to give up, the tripod began to move.

"Quality of consciousness," it spelled. A pause---then, once more, "Quality of consciousness."

"Darby!" Joan took her fingers from the pointer. "You can't fool me like that. You did it! 'Quality of consciousness'---that doesn't mean anything, anyway."

I looked into Joan's eyes. Was it she who had moved the tripod, or did she honestly accuse me?

"Not guilty!" I pleaded. For a moment we faced each other in silence. Then said Joan, gravely, "Let's try it again." So we tried it again.

On the instant the tripod gathered strength. Over the alphabet it moved, slowly, yet with machinelike precision, pausing on this letter and that. Here are the words it spelled: "For you two I have a message, a revelation....

What is it like to communicate with spirits?

Several months ago, there was a thread in a discussion forum on what it is like to perceive psychically. While I have described some of my experiences taking classes in mediumship on my web site, there are some aspects to the experience that I didn't include on my web site which I explained more fully in the discussion forum...

In mediumship class, I experienced several different types of psychic perceptions. Most of the time I perceived things visually. Occasionally I would also get words, smells, sounds, emotions, other sensations, and make gestures.

  • Visual perceptions would appear in my mind's eye, like remembering what something looked like, like a dream, like hypnogogic imagery. It was quite an ordinary sensation which is why it can be hard to teach some people to recognize their psychic perceptions. They are expecting something extraordinary and mystical, and overlook the ordinary.

  • Sometimes I would feel words in my mouth as if I was about to say them. Other times words would come to me as if I was thinking them.

  • Smells seemed to be real, and outside myself as if others could smell them too.

  • Sounds also seemed to be real, outside myself as if others could hear them.

  • I usually didn't recognize that I was being influenced when I used a gesture. A couple of times I was told by different sitters that a gesture I made during the reading was significant. The gestures were uncharacteristic of me and very meaningful to the sitter.

  • Other types of sensations would also occur. Often, if I asked the spirit how he died, I would feel a sensation in the part of my body associated with the cause of death. For example, I would sense a tingling in my chest if the spirit had died of a heart attack.

  • I would occasionally feel emotions. Once when the spirit wanted to convey her love for the sitter, I felt how she felt. It was a very moving experience.

Communicating with spirits is different than other forms of psychic perception because the perceptions are induced by spirits. They can influence your body with their mind the way you would influence your own body with your own mind. Because of this, you don't have to be very psychic to get impressions from spirits because they do part of the work by influencing you. You don't have to rely entirely on your own abilities. This is especially true in a class setting because of the presence of spirit guides and the skill spirits develop with practice. The longer a student has been in class the better the spirits of his deceased friends and relatives will be at communicating with living people. Having a group of psychics together in the same place seems to have an effect that makes psychic perceptions easier too. Also, some spirits will be a good match for a particular person, and it will be easier to perceive communications from them than other spirits. It's a lot like when you meet someone and you immediately know you like that person and can you understand each other easily when you speak with him, you just have a similar way of thinking about the world. It can be like that when communicating with a spirit.

When I would do a reading in class, I would look around the room and one of the people there would somehow stand out from the rest. This could be a pronounced visual effect as if I was viewing just that one person through a telephoto lens. That is how I knew who I was going to give a reading to. Then I would close my eyes and I would see a person (the spirit) in my mind's eye. I would describe the spirit and the sitter would say if he recognized the spirit. I would mentally ask the spirit questions like what he did in life, and what he used to do when he was with the sitter. I would usually get some type of visual answer which I would describe to the sitter. If I asked how he died I would usually feel a sensation the part of the body that was associated with his death. For example, if he died of a heart attack, I would feel something in my chest. All of this often worked very well and the sitter could identify the spirit and confirm the information I conveyed.

Sometimes when I was giving a reading in class, I would also get a strong impression of the personality of the spirit. I think this is one way mental mediumship is superior to physical mediumship. It is harder for the spirit to lie to a good mental medium because of the mental contact.

Out-of Body Experiences, Real and Fake. Don't be fooled by how-to books making false claims. Better Ways to Have a Genuine Paranormal Experience.

Six Studies of Out-of-Body Experiences by Charles T. Tart, Ph.D. (PDF HTML) is an interesting paper that describes six studies of out-of-body experiences (OBEs) that Tart conducted himself.

The excerpt below is from the Conclusions section of the paper. It gives a good summary of Tart's findings. He found that an OBE may be one of a variety of experiences. In some OBEs, the mind seems to leave the body. However some OBEs are just illusions. And, in other OBEs it appears that the experience is due to extra sensory perceptions. In these latter type of OBEs the experiencer seems to perceive without using his normal senses, but the mind does not leave the body. What is particularly important in assessing an OBE is whether the experiencer perceives anything that can be verified which he could not perceive with his normal senses. When that type of veridical information is obtained by an experiencer, it suggests the experience is more than an illusion.

The most important point to understand from this paper is that even for people who are experts at having OBEs, OBEs are very rarely veridical and even fewer OBEs are really cases where the mind leaves the body. Tart's findings have implications for people who are interested in trying to learn to have OBEs. Many people buy books and audio CDs that claim to teach how to have an OBE. However, many customers end up feeling cheated because all they experience are a few non-veridical dreams of being out of the body. Understandably, people buy these books because they want to have some type of paranormal experience. I don't mean to discourage people from trying them, they may work for some, but they should have realistic expectation and not be fooled by misleading claims.

My belief, from reading the literature, from personal contacts with other people who have OBEs, and from my own experiences with OBEs, is that spontaneous OBEs, where the OBE occurs without the experiencer trying to have the experience, are the most likely to involve the mind leaving the body and be veridical. The techniques described in books and audio CDs that claim to allow a person to learn to induce an OBE are more likely to produce non-veridical dreams of OBEs. This should not be surprising since most of these techniques involve going into a deeply relaxed state and doing some type of visualization of being out of the body or imagining leaving the body. It seems likely that this could lead to dreams of an OBE if the person drifted off into sleep. Some of these techniques are similar to techniques used for hypnotic induction, and they might induce a form of self-hypnosis. One form of OBEs Tart found to be illusory were OBEs induced by hypnosis.

While I don't endorse any teacher or institution, it is possible that working individually with a teacher or taking a class might produce better results than working alone from a book or CD. Those conditions have been shown to work well for other types of psychic learning. For example, my own experiences learning mediumship occurred in a group class. I also worked individually with a teacher. There is an effect from having a group of people working together that enhances psychic experiences and it is also possible that there may be spiritual entities working with a particular teacher that can help the student. Unfortunately, you can't put those things into a book like an audio CD tucked inside the back cover.

However, there are much better ways to have a genuine paranormal experience than trying to have an OBE and they don't cost money:

Here is the excerpt from the Conclusions of Tart's paper:

I believe that in some OBEs, the mind may, at least partially, really be located elsewhere than the physical body; this may have been the case with Miss Z. At the opposite extreme, as with my virtuoso hypnotic subjects whose experience was vivid and perfectly real to them but whose perception of the target room was only illusory, I believe an OBE can be a simulation of being out of the body, with the mind as much "in" the physical body as it ever is. In between these two extremes, I believe we can have OBEs that are basically a simulation of being out, but which are informed by information gathered by ESP such that the simulation of the OBE location is accurate and veridical. This is a messy situation in some ways, especially because all three of these types of OBEs may seem experientially identical to the person having them, at least at rough levels of description.

Here are some excerpts that from the different studies.

First study:

My participants' descriptions of the target had occasional resemblances to the target materials, but the similarities were much too vague for me to put any reliance upon them.

Second Study:

On the first three laboratory nights Miss Z reported that in spite of occasionally being "out," she had not been able to control her experiences enough to be in position to see the target number (which was different each night). On the fourth night, at 5:57 AM, there was a seven minute period of somewhat ambiguous EEG activity, sometimes looking like stage 1, sometimes like brief wakings. Then Miss Z awakened and called out over the intercom that the target number was 25132, which I wrote on the EEG recording.

...

The number 25132 was indeed the correct target number. I had learned something about designing experiments since my first OBE experiment and precise evaluation was possible here. The odds against guessing a 5-digit number by chance alone are 100,000 to 1, so this was a remarkable event!

Third Study:

Thus we have only weak evidence that Monroe was actually "out" on this occasion, a result he found as unsatisfactory as I did

Fourth Study:

When Monroe finished his brief OBE he got out of bed to telephone me: it was 11:05 PM, our time. Thus he experienced a tug pulling him from his body within one or two minutes of the time we started concentrating. The portion of his account that I have omitted, on the other hand, his description of our home and what my wife and I were doing, was quite inaccurate. He perceived too many people in the room, and perceived my wife and me performing actions that we did not do.

Fifth Study:

Again we have that frustrating pattern of my research with Monroe of no ESP results clear enough to be conclusive, but not results so clearly inaccurate that I would feel comfortable saying nothing at all happened.

Sixth Study:

All the participants reported vivid OBEs that seemed like real experiences to them. They included journeys to places they knew, like downtown Davis, that were vividly experienced, as well as vivid experiences of journeying to the target room. None of their reports of what they saw on the target table bore any clear resemblance to the targets. A formal analysis was not worth the trouble.
